Comments:
A personal best!
One of my favorite contests, this is the 23rd year since 1997 I have
participated. (I missed 1997 as we were traveling.) Also my best year
on 6M -- in fact, due to the constant 6M e-Skip, I didn't hear much
on 2 & 432, although I listened (and called) often.
FT8 and FT4 have obviously taken over for the vast majority of
participants. The mode distribution below tells all:
Band CW SSB FT8 FT4 Total Grids
---- -- ----- --- --- ----- -----
6 11 55 90 42 198 99
2 0 16 0 0 16 7
70 0 5 0 0 5 4
-- ----- --- --- ----- ----
Total 11 76 90 41 219 110
This is the closest I have ever been to VUCC in a weekend!
I still find FT8 slower than SSB. (My CW skills are not good enough
for comparison.) But FT4 does seem to be equivalent for rate to SSB,
although not as sensitive as FT8 as expected. (Assuming enough hams
are running at the time.)
Four unconfirmed grids (2 new), two unconfirmed countries (1 new) on 6M.
A random observation:
* Operators need to ask if anyone else wants a Q before QSYing. I
missed a number of potential Qs, because after listening to two
operators (without hearing any call signs) they would QSY to another
band and miss my points. Without knowing who/where they were I
probably didn't have my yagis pointing at them and never heard them
again. BEFORE QSYing, ASK IF ANY OTHERS ARE LISTENING!
Mostly S&P
