Comments:
First serious 100% remote contest effort for me. This was the shakedown cruise
for the newly installed Tampa ARC Flex 6400 remote system after our huried
installation for Field Day. Learned a lot about remote contesting!
Ant: C31XR at 108ft, EF240X at 118ft
Rig: FlexRadio 6400 remoted with Maestro
Fair condx. Only a couple of burps with the system. One SWR lock up with the
"known software defect" that screws up the tuner memory which needed a
full cold start from the radio. Otherwise, no issues.
Latency in CW drove me nuts till I figured out that I cant look at the Maestro
screen because the power out is not in sync with the CW keying, as the sidetone
is local and ahead of the radio power output meter indications. Once I ignored
this nuance, I adapted to the latency better. Less of a problem in SSB, as no
headset monitor sidetone is possible with Flex. New ways, new challenges.
Being top of the pileup to ZL1 on 40m with 100w is certainly a thrill after
hearing lots of other big stations call and get busted! Love that 40m beam!
Thanks to the Tampa ARC for letting me hog up the station for the weekend. Next
on my Remote agenda is SS SSB from the comfort of my own shack with the big TARC
antennas!
