Comments:
This is the first year I haven't operated as P49X since 2008. (Well, in 2017 I
broke my leg two days before leaving to operate M2 from ZF1A.) In any case, the
contest experience is a bit different from my home QTH. Of course, the biggest
difference is latitude 37, but I also only have an Inverted-V dipole at 78' for
20m. 80, 40 and 15 antennas are all dead along with the 5-element 20m Yagi.
So, decided to do a SB20 and get some much needed sleep as we're in the midst of
harvest, having an arduous pick on Friday. Had an early, leisurely dinner with
Mary and started the contest 30 minutes late.
I haven't used the online scoreboard much so decided to try it and glad I did.
It just so happened that Steve, N8BJQ, was also SB20 and for some reason we kept
within a few points of each other all weekend. It was fun to watch the
scoreboard as a single-op because it gives a touch of socialization via watching
friends' progress throughout the contest. Kept rooting for K5ZD to stop taking
breaks and give Jeff, AC0C, some pressure, but Randy's gotten lazy these days.
SO1R allowed multiplexing SO2V with email, phone calls, web surfing, movies,
games, etc. Tuned the band countless times top to bottom and it got pretty slim
on Sunday. Jealous of Bill, W9FFH, operating ZF1A remotely.
Somehow missed WV and MT and I worked nearly every EU I could copy (3% of total
Qs). It was frustrating listening to stations east of us working a steady
stream of EUs and mostly I could detect a trace of the EU signals. All the US
QSOs (71%) were a big help in this "DX" contest and, of course, Asia
(140 JAs) is good from this coast. It's just not near enough to make up for EU
Qs and mults.
RTTY contest operating continues to improve. Some messages are unnecessarily
lengthy, but overall QSOs are more snappy than 10 years ago. There were only a
couple instances of S&P stations calling me with their exchange. Don't know
how or why this started a few years ago, but glad to see it minimal this
weekend. There were a handful of stations that duped me 6 or more times, even
minutes apart. Manual logging with dementia?
Most of the time 20m was open, stations were spread out right up to 14150. At
times, it was more crowded at the top than between 14080-14100. I found a lot
of activity on the 14100 beacon frequency, more so than usual it seemed. A few
times stations were at or below 14080 were the JT and FT activity is. Of
course, FT4 uses 14080-14083, but that mode was modified from FT8 expressly for
contesting, so maybe it's OK for them to be inconvenienced during an actual
digital contest.
The contest provided a nice environment for continuing field test of the
Elecraft K4 which performed excellently. I continue to be amazed at how well it
handles heavy contest QRM. Of course, it can't improve cases were a nearby
dirty signal puts trash in the passband, but the clarity in QRM is the best of
any radio I've used.
Thanks to all who participated, not matter how much. You all make it fun for
everyone.
