Comments:
What to say for this contest 2020 ? Lots of fun, fatigue, and the lower your
latitude is and the luckier you get when the K index is 3 most of the weekend
(reached 5 twice).
The 2-3 days preceding the contest suggested a good hope for the propagation on
15m during the contest.
The previous Thursday I had the opportunity to contact Bud, AA3B, on RTTY on 15m
(@ 15.00z) and his report was 599+10dB. There were also good reports with
Central Asia since few days and Es openings on Europe ...
But ... The forecast of Geomagnetic Activity predicted disturbed conditions...
And ... Kp index picked to 5+ and A to 43 during the contest ... so using 100w
doesn't help on the high bands.
To summarize :
- 80m : fantastic ! The best propagation I have experienced since a long time.
My best score on this band, remember that I am only using an inverted V dipole
(although the tower serves as a bit of a reflector towards the NA) and no RX
antenna. To highlight the call received from ZM4T very clearly and easily worked
on Sunday morning at 05.49z (sunrise here). Also heard a JA on local Saturday
evening (their sunrise), a few calls given but quickly abandoned. Also some
stations which seemed completely deaf when they were very loud and not
necessarily far.
- 40m : rather satisfactory. Contacts with JA, DU and HL were more difficult
than usual. Good activity from YB. Exceptional propagation with NA on Sunday
evening during their sunset then around 23.30z, the 80 and 40m became
impractical (radio blackout the last 15m minutes)
- 20m : rather normal for this part of the cycle. Disappointing Saturday at my
latitude. Very tiring, during 2 hours, because of the atmospheric QRN due to the
drizzle on Sunday morning (so disastrous that I almost took a break but I
didn't) and in good condition the rest of the day.
- 15m : I expected better but it could have been worse ... All parts of the
world were heard (except Oceania) but it was sometimes hard/impossible to make
the contact because of the 100w. For the 2nd year in a row, not a single
US/Canadian state worked on this band ; just a few rare and sporadic US diddles
heard via skewed path to South America. A few, not very prolific, short skip
openings to Europe.
- 10m : standard for this part of the cycle. You had to be at the righ place at
the right time for the rare and short Es openings (mainly Sundays). South
America was stronger on Saturday evening.
To conclude, rather satisfied with the result (my best score since I'm doing
this contest seriously in the last 5 years) considering the propagation. I''m
not sure I could have done better so no regrets. My goal during the preparation
of the contest in the previous weeks was to achieve, 2460 QSO, 318 DXCC, 99
zones & 114 states for 3 million points. So objectives almost achieved, I
would even say "was this a goal or a premonition?"
Note some operators who call by giving the report, this practice seems to
increase, where does it comes from ? FT8 ? Overall, macros are pretty well done
now by users
Tnx for the QSO & C U on the screen the next year with a completly new
antenna system if everything goes as planned.
