Comments:
Thank you to Tim, N6WIN, for hosting us this weekend. While it may seem
difficult to be safe during this pandemic, we tried our best as one of the few
on site multi ops. We had the radios 6 feet apart, each op had their own
headsets, and we sanitized the station during each op change. Is this a perfect
solution? No, but we did our best to minimize the risks in doing a SSB multi op
during these times.
Our main radios were 2 IC7610s. These are the same radios that we normally use
during our ZF multi ops, but since that operation wasn't possible this year we
were very happy to use them for our multi op here. We had a few ops that have
never used the 7610 before and they were all very impressed with it.
Most of the ops here were able to use the Inrad W1 headsets for this contest. I
am not a big fan of how the Heil mics sound with Icom, but the W1's have been a
great addition.
Like everyone else, we were pleasantly surprised with conditions on the high
bands. Being able to work both EU and JA on 10m during a contest hasn't happened
out here in years, so it was a nice surprise. 15m was good to EU and JA both
days as well. The only surprise was that 80 and 160 were in rough shape with
very few EU found in the log on 80.
We had a great team of guys. Some of us have never operated together but
everyone worked great together. W6PH is our grizzled veteran and he put in lots
of hours throughout the weekend. W4IX was a brand new member to our team, and he
was able to help with some projects prior to the start of the contest and put in
more hours overall than anyone else on the team. I have a feeling that he will
be spending lots of time in Wickenburg over the next few years. W9KKN was a late
addition to the team, but he has been a major part of our ZF1A team. Not only
was he diagnosing issues with our station here, but he was also on call to help
diagnose issues with the ZF1A station remote operation; his team work is
invaluable. N6WIN has put so much work into this station over the last year, it
was nice to be able to put the station to work. I think he was finally able to
see why he has been doing all this work, and it really paid off with a big score
from here this weekend. Tim had recently returned from K3LR's QTH with a
snowbird set of recently retired OWA's that he and Hector, XE2K, worked together
in placing in service just before the contest. The old LR antennas definitely
thanked us for their new life in sunny AZ.
