Comments:
Travelling to a remote destination is challenging by itself, but with COVID-19
restrictions, you may multiply it by 3 (at least).
In September when driving to Sept-Iles, I intentionally left one set of
equipment there, so I would return by plane for the CQ WW
DX SSB and wouldn't be needing to carry a lot of stuff with me. Since SSB
Contests are becoming less and less attractive to me,
I also decided not to complicate things and do just the Classic style operation
with one radio and leave all the SO2R fun for CW
leg.
Normally one would need to fly to Sept-Iles through Quebec City, however, to my
surprise, those flight were not available at the
time of my booking, so the only route was offered was from Toronto to Ottawa,
then to Montreal and then to Sept-Iles (3 flights, two stops) and only on Monday
or Wednesday. Wednesday seemed to be a bit late for me, considering usual
antenna work needs to be done before the Contest, so I couldn't help but choose
Monday.
Just a couple of days before my departure Air Canada cancelled my 10 A.M. flight
to Ottawa, so I had to reschedule for earlier.
Had to get up at 4 A.M. on Monday morning in order to be at the airport at
around 6:30 to catch my new 8 A.M. flight. I didn't
fly since the start of pandemic and was pleasantly surprised by no delays. Each
flight would actually leave 10-15 minutes earlier.
Finally after 3 take-offs and landings I was at at the small Sept-Iles few
minutes after 3 P.M. Steve VE2TKH picked me and brought to the station. Took me
a bit over 10 hours door to door.
Next two days I was busy installing a 160 m antenna and repairing 80 m, which I
temporary fixed in September. The WX was not
cooperating, producing rain with snow mix, combing that with strong wind. Did
final touches on Thursday, when the weather turned into sunshine with +7C
temperature. I was done by Thursday noon, even putting up a 30 m dipole to
satisfy numerous requests for Zone 2 on 30 M. For the moment I regretted that I
didn't bring enough gear to do the SO2R because normally I wouldn't have enough
time for setting it up.
Even managed to participate in all 3 sessions of CWT on Wednesday.
Started Contest on 80 m with pretty decent pile-up and operated on the same
frequency for a couple of hours. Switched to 40 too
late for Europe: the Big Guns were still loud but couldn't produce any pile-up
unless turning the beam to the U.S. After putting in the LOG more than a 1,000
contacts in the first 7 hours, I decided to take a couple of hours nap in order
to save some energy for morning EU pile-ups. Wasn't really tired, but the rates
dropped significantly to 10-15 Q/hr. 40 wasn't good, and 80 and 160 were just
empty.
Working usual 220-270/hr. pile-ups to EU in the morning, was checking 15
time-to-time, but though having some activity, the band was kind of watery and
whenever I tried to call CQ, I couldn't attract anybody's attention. It really
picked up only shortly after 15 Z. The pile up wasn't as crazy as on 20, but hey
- who complaints nowadays when 15 M opens!
15 M opening was so promising, I was hoping for 10, but could only hear and work
few S.A. stations there. Came to 40 meters too late, about 2 hours before our
sunset, nut Europeans were already starting to fade away, so no big pile-up
there either.
Obviously, with my modest setup I couldn't count on a miracle and it was logical
that whenever I would try to do S&P'ing the netter equipped stations would
outshout me. Obviously larger beam for 20 and 15 and better antenna for 80 would
help.
Unfortunately, after quiet last year, the noise returned and it was worse on 160
and 10 here. Sorry for being an alligator on 160 and (maybe) 80 - didn't put up
any receiving antenna this time.
Again, slept few hours on Sunday morning and was back in time for routine 20 m
pile-up. 15 meters started a bit earlier on Sunday which was promising, and I
got carried away with nice pile up there so I almost missed short EU opening on
10. Still managed to work few dozens of EU countries, but with only one radio it
was difficult to monitor the opening. Switched to 40 a bit earlier this time and
managed quite a nice 2-hour pile-up which really improved my multiplier total on
40.
Finished the Contest with a couple of 200+ rate on 20 meters.
Obviously,with a 2nd radio I could probably add a Million or Two to my score,
but I am pretty happy with my score.
Worked 235 Canadian QSO's for ZERO-pointers (a two hours of work?) - never
worked so many VE's before!
Returned home on Monday night with only one stop in Montreal this time.
Thanks to all for the Q's and especially to those who graciously agreed to move
on another band for me.
See you all in CW leg next month, hopefully with better set-up.
P.S. For those who need Zone 2 on certain bands, Steve VE2TKH will be still
active on SSB, CW and FT8 for another couple of months using Club Call of
VE2CSI. There are now antennas on all bands, but 12 meters. Please be patient
while working him, Steve is disabled after having a stroke few years ago and is
only able to use his left hand.

YAESU FT1000MP radio + Alpha 76A amplifier (800...900 watts).
RigExpert TI-5 USB Interface, N1MM+ Logger.
Antennas:
160: K2KQ bent vertical dipole with top at about 55 '
80: half wave dipole with apex at 45'
40: 2 el. HyGain Beam at 65'
20-10: 3 el. HyGain Explorter 14 Tribander at 55'
No RX antennas this time.
