Comments:

Conditions were really the pits in September with SFI around 70; cycle 25 has
certainly roared to life with the SFI 110 Saturday and cycle best 116 on
Sunday.
The first 24 hours was close to what I expected. At the start 20 was open well
only to deep SA and D4Z in Cape Verde who always seemed to be there. 40 was good
to southern/central/western EU, but not northern or NE EU. 80 was okay into EU,
signal levels not as loud as some other years and 160 was quite difficult for a
LP station, EU not really reachable either night. Saturday morning 20 opened
earlier than my 12Z start, some strong signals from all over EU, but the
Russians did not last long; best DX to east was R8WF in Asia but in zone 16. 15
was open well to EU except for N and NE EU. I left 15M at 1538Z for 20 as
running was already difficult. 10 was not in good shape; I did work a weak EA8
and ED7 around 1530Z. Both 15 and 20 closed pretty early to EU. I had some very
good runs on both bands, but the QSO count was a bit less than I had hoped. 10
was open well to SA in the 17Z hour and I worked N7 and VA7 as well. By mid
afternoon, the Pacific was coming through well on 15 = VK, ZL, KH6 as well as
decent conditions to the south; ZD7 and C6 were both loud with huge pile ups; I
gave up on both. Ct 21Z, I worked 5 Hawaiians on 10 with strong signals. Despite
a loud NL7, the prop to JA on 20 was terrible, auroral curtain just perfectly
blocking all but the loudest ones. The low were not in great shape Saturday
evening; 40 did stay open to southern EU. It was a struggle.

Sunday AM started off well on 40, got double mults from UN9, VK, ZM, and JA, but
no KH6 heard. 20 seemed to open later, but improved just after 12Z with many
loud NE Europeans and I was lucky to be called by a weak EX8. At 13Z 15 was open
to EU but improved very quickly with some very booming signals and even Northern
EU was there. The Moscow area was weak, but Black Sea 6's were booming. Best DX
to NE was 4L1 and TA. At 1424Z I worked my first EU on 10, an IR4; I don't
recall any EU signals being loud, but Africa certainly was loud. OM, CR3, F, and
XE went into the 10M log, later joined by ZD7 and EA5, and at 16Z YU, 9A, DL,
7Q, and CR6. 15 stayed open for running until 1650Z, and 20 was excellent
through 1745Z, much better prop! Starting about 2144Z, I was able to easily
S&P JA's on 20 as my time was running out.

I was more disciplined this year, missed a few minutes when I had to in the AM
runs, but otherwise stuck to taking the minimum 1 hour off time. I was surprised
to be able to run low in the band on 20 and 15, and even when forced to go
higher the rate was still good. Many thanks for the calls and digging out my LP
signal. I broke some big pile ups, but had to quit on others. What a relief to
have 15 solid and 10 showing signs of life!

73, Jeff
