Comments:
5 decades ago, I thought these CQ WPX events were the dumbest contest design
ever. It made no sense to me that call sign prefixes were multipliers. Over
time, WPXs became some of my favorite contests. There are new multipliers every
few QSOs through the operating period. The score goes up exponentially, the
longer you stay in the chair. This adds a lot of interest and incentive to
power through the weekend.
Until this year all my WPX RTTY contests have been as P49X, so I had low
expectations for operating with wires from the west coast of NA. Those
expectations were greatly exceeded though. I didn't think I could get to 1
million points, let alone 2 million. Two thirds of the QSOs were domestic for a
QSO/point average of 2.05, even lower than with reasonable antennas here in CA.
Less than half the QSO rate than in Aruba and less than 15% of the scores there.
But still enough activity to enjoy the weekend contesting.
Most of the very few EU QSOs were arduous S&P to even be heard by them, let
alone passing a serial number. A handful of the big EU stations did find me
CQing, surely with Packet help. Dipoles are a challenge for working Europe.
OTOH, operating from a coastal ridge top, 2,600' above the Pacific Ocean, does
fine into Oceania and eastern Asia. Even the side of the 15-meter Yagi does
great with the sloping foreground in that direction.
I CQ'd a bit on 10m mid-day and Packet help bag a few QSOs. Thanks to Max KH6ZM
and the NR6O remote multi-op team for working me on all 5 bands. Also, the 15
4-band QSOs were much appreciated. Ten was open to parts of NA during the day,
as evidenced by the RBN. More people just need to get on during the day.
Can't wait to get back to P4 to soothe the withdrawal pain. I'm half-way
through the vaccine regimen, so hopefully soon. We just completed an all-new
tower/antenna rebuild there a year ago when the pandemic hit. Need to put the
new hardware through the paces now.
Thanks for the QSOs.
Ed
