Comments:
Following the CW event last month, a couple of team members asked what I was
thinking for the phone contest. Initially, due to other life priorities, I was
not planning to put the station on for phone. But, after discussions with the
crew, we came to agreement that we could mount a limited M/S effort with me
acting mainly as tech support; the rest of the team would handle all the
operating.
As always, it takes a team. NN1C was, once again, pivotal in getting the station
in shape for SSB remote. WC1M did a lot of operating and also contributed a ton
on the technical side - investing substantial time and effort in audio and
antenna testing. W9KKN stepped in with operator recruiting in addition to his
own commitment for the full 48. He brought us David WD6T for the whole weekend.
K1EP jumped in, volunteering to help out with the slow, late-night hours. Little
did we know just how much 'slow' would be available in this contest. Thanks to
all team members for investing your time in this one!
WC1M had the hardest pre-contest job - operator scheduling. It didn't take him
long to figure out that there was no way to 'spread the wealth' amongst three
ops hoping to show their stuff with a projection of only 6 hours of high-rate
running throughout the entire 48 hours.
This was a tough contest. Band conditions made everything hard, but we
understood it was hard for everyone. And, remote operation made it hard, too. As
Tier 1 Tech Support for the operation, I handled a lot of issues that never
would have cropped up without all the ops being remote. There was definitely a
'remote overhead' that cost us time on the air and a few points. We can fix most
of the issues - and we have to if we're going to crank up the rate as conditions
improve . . .
Many thanks to the DX ops who listened for us when we weren't all that loud.
And, thanks to our competitors - N1MM, K3ND, K3JO and others - who made it
interesting by posting to the online scoreboard. That really makes it fun.
What a battle in SO(U)! Great to watch the back-and-forth on the scoreboard.
And, the outstanding DX MS performances from J68HZ and ZF1A . . . hard to beat
record holder P40V 1994 with 9,859,860 in these conditions.
Congrats and thanks to all who made the effort in this contest, across all
categories, all station capabilities and all skill levels. It was hard, but your
participation is what makes it all work!
