Comments:
Another remote multi-multi evolution at Radio Oakley. We egged some of the teams
more stalwart cw operators into breaking out their headsets and foot switches,
so our Fone team was a bit bigger this go round, and we needed it to basically
meet last years goals due to challenging conditions. Here was what happened on
the bands....
10m (K6AW K6KM)
As expected with poor solar situation, 10m was a slog from northern CA. we are
obliged to be present, and that presence for use produced 45 QSO's, SA, domestic
and OC. usual fare.
15m (N6WM)
Both bad and good. we tripled qso counts from last year, and some good dx was
worked. Not as much JA as expected and needed. Usual counts from VK/ZL. good
domestic on Saturday padded the logs, also good South America Saturday and some
usual odd spotlight wicked dx, ZS2 Sunday am was a treat.
20m (K3EST captain, K7GK on much of Sunday)
Our 20m qso count was significantly down from last year, and our op schedule had
to be modified due to some shack difficulty Sunday. Bob did his usual fb job
when in the chair through Sun am. then Denis. (a bit of gap coverage from K6KM)
we managed to keep the candle burning despite the challenges with some
inconvenient pauses. But band condx is the only explanation for reduced numbers
of this maginitude, we did what we could
40M (WD6T first half captain WX5S second half captain daytime coverage from N6WM
and W6DMW)
Dave and Matt had most of the heaving lifting on this band, and a good job they
did. Dave had some EU runs and picked off what he could, Matt was focused on
JA/OC/LP. They did their usual professional job. daytime Sat coverage by our
Rookie, W6DMW and Sunday Day was covered by N6WM SO2R with 15 meters. This was
actually quite productive for usa and added to our totals well.
80M (K7GK K6KM N6RO)
K7GK kicked off our 80m effort. he worked hard, and boosted score compared to
last year, despite antenna issues that were resolved Sat night with our quads.
(4sq is currently a 3sq after bad winds last week). Managed more JA, but a lack
of additional Asia was disappointing. was happy however to put a western
Australian(VK6) in the log. always a good thing. K6KM had a go at the band and
did well, as well as Ken N6RO who was compelled to handle a portion SO2R with
160 Sunday AM. he also fixed quads during all of this. Maybe he is CQC HOF
material.. ya think?
160 (NT6V N6RO)
NT6V stepped up and nosed down on 160 despite solar condx. He did a great job
and through pure grit and bic logged most of our 160 qso totals the first night.
Ken handled night 2. prop was difficult on the band, particularly from here,
again we did what we could. vy dissapointed that some Carrib /SA mainstays were
not workable this go round.. but good stuff happens in the morning to Asia pac
when RO is on the prowl, this time no exception.
Overall, we are getting weary of these remote operations and certain contest
problems are very difficult without a staffed team, but we powered through.
Overall if we did not try different methods, we would not have matched last
years score, but indeed we did so and are happy with the effort.
On behalf of the entire N6RO contest team, thanks for the QSO's, we are grateful
to Ken N6RO for the opportunity to work from this great station, and miss his
Contest Chili. We congratulate the ND7K team for building and staffing such a
wonderful station at a better geo location. We choose to compete with
ourselves.. a decision we chose as a group prior to the contest, the bay area is
a unique qth for contest condition. We enjoy using the online scoreboard none
the less, and are happy to have one of our team members supporting you.
