How do you cram a 1500W, Multi/2 station on a ¼ acre lot in a residential
subdivision with a single, 72 ft retractable, tilt-over tower serving all the
transmit antennas? Ask Dave, AA4VT. He did it with minimal interference
between bands using ferrite chokes on just about every lead and coax,
high-powered Band-Pass filters made by VA6AM, and what seemed to be miles of
stub filters, interconnecting cables and wires. In addition, the station was
almost fully automated, so that tired ops wouldn’t plug or unplug a critical
cable in the heat of battle. The tower supports both a Steppir DB36 at 75 ft
covering 40-10m, and a home-brew, optimized 3, 4, and 5 element Yagi for 20, 15,
and 10m respectively at 40 ft. The tower was shunt feed for 80 and 160M. RX
antennas for the low bands were NE and NW pennants. Incredible engineering –
our hats are off to Dave.
But the conditions were a bit brutal at times. Even with 3 elements at 75ft,
getting into EU on 40m was a challenge on Friday and Saturday nights. During
the day on 20 and 15m, EU was not heard until afternoon. Asia was almost
totally absent. The static crashes on 80 and 160m from the huge storm extending
from Louisiana to Illinois allowed us to get a few hours sleep on Saturday night
from 2-6 am, which was good for us older members of the time (that would be all
of us, except one). We managed some good 100-120/hr runs, but much of our time
was S&P’ing for those non-dupes and mults we could hear.
Great time at an amazing station! Congrats to our team and to Dave!
