Comments:
Our entry was in the new M2 category which is not listed on 3830. We were M2.
Thanks to JE1CKA and the JIDX committee for providing this new category. We had
a great time. Condx on 20-10 were poor and practically non-existent on 15.
40-160 were good. Here are the ops comments.
160: N6RO More than doubled last year's score, for a new record in JIDX. Good
participation quiet band, good prop for April. Sigs never strong, and rapid QSB
made copy difficult. Could not copy many who called, which is normal for the
station. The best thing both nights was Matt and Dave passing JAs to 160, many
of them mults. Points on 80/160 helped us exceed last year's score. Night shift
ROCKS! Note: our 160 signal was spotted in E2, BY and
80: WX5S the first night did a great job digging out the calling stations.
Passing to 160 was successful quite a few times. On first night 80m, band was
relatively quiet, but signal strengths were below average. I used the Quad
exclusively, the 3 SQ was not as good into JA. Normally the 4 SQ would be
better on the long haul to JA, but not with the 3 SQ's pattern!
40: First Night: K3EST 40 was immediately open at the 0700 hour and remained
open until 1530. The signals were still good at 1530 but the JAs shifted their
interest to Europe. The band had a lot of QSB and about 0900 the woodpecker came
on forcing CQs higher in the band. 40 also late morning has many illegal YB
fishing boat SSB QRM from 7005-7015.
Managed to work 45 prefectures (missed 23 and 44!!).
40/80 Second Night: WD6T Second night 40 was open at 0515 with decent signals,
but we seemed to hear them better than they heard us. 40 continued to produce
throughout the night, though not high numbers. 80 opened at JA sunset with a
small flurry of calls , then sporadic until the best hour..around 1030-1130z.
Some deep QSB ranging from inaudible to Q5. SO2R alternating CQ worked well and
kept operator engaged, A number of non-contesters were kind enough to give
prefecture number. Was happy to see us get all prefectures (between the bands)
except 49 and 50. Thanks to those who moved to 80 and 160; several stations did
both. 80 managed to work JD1BNA the second night.
20: K6AW 20 was a challenge - I can't recall a contest when I called CQ as many
times as this one. There was considerable QSB on signals much of the time. I
used the "CQ JA" CQ message for the entire contest -- only a couple of
W's called. Overall I was disappointed in the conditions and participation on
20M. The band failed to open late as it did the last few years.
15: N6WM 15 did not open to JA, despite numerous spots in Oceania including 3d2,
ZL VK. Also got spotted while CQing at EA8 and KP2 assuming off the back. Both
JA worked were skew path and super weak. I had to point 2X antennas in stack to
work 1, the other I just used top antenna. Thanks to JN2AMD and JF9JTS for
hearing our signals.
