Comments:
I was up early working on the 4 square radials. This will take me weeks! Went
to the shack to work VK9XX, then a quick breakfast. A couple minutes before the
contest (as normal) I went to the shack, but discovered the 40/80 inverted vee
had very high SWR. I would normally do 40 meters only at 1300Z because 20 does
not open well in the early morning, but had no choice. Fortunately, the inverted
vee is on a pulley and it is likely the feed line. It is almost the only
antenna that I can fix from the ground, otherwise I would be QRT for months.
There was not much activity at first, but it picked up after about 20 minutes
even though most signals were not strong. There was a steady, but slow rate of
callers, but I was pleasantly surprised at the number of Europeans and USA guys
that I normally do not work. It would have been a perfect second band for SO2R.
Lots of CQ, and rarely did two people call at once.
