Comments:
Big thank you again to Icom for allowing us to use the IC7610's for this
contest. They worked great and I just can't say enough about their performance.
During this contest a particular feature that was helpful was the digital data
output port which allowed integration with N1MM's spectrum display.
This is a tough contest to do in AZ during the summer months. It was 109 during
the contest which led to the 10m GHE remote, controlling the 10m stackmatch, to
overheating in the equipment shed. Luckily we knew exactly what the issue was
and it was only down for about 45 minutes on 10m. By that point, 10m was mostly
gone anyways so it wasn't a big loss. This was our only equipment issue this
weekend and for everything to survive in this environment says a lot.
Last year I did Mixed mode which was a lot of fun, but this year I decided to do
CW only. I really wanted to give the spectrum display in N1MM a try. This was
my first time really using N1MM in any major contest and I have to say it wasn't
bad. The spectrum display was an interesting tool and I will have to do some
more contests with it to really get to the point of it helping my score.
I have done SO3R in several contests in the past, but it was always a struggle.
This was the first time that I did SO3R where I really feel it gave me a boost
in my score. I made 194 q's on the 3rd radio and it allowed me to really scour
the bands for mults. We did not have any in band capabilities this go around so
the fact that 10m was open most of the day really helped make this a useful
tool.
Thanks as always to Tim N6WIN for putting up with me for a few days. It was a
lot of fun having guys like N2IC and N9RV on from out west. Unfortunately Mitch,
K7RL, couldn't join us again as he had an equipment malfunction. Since I knew
they would be breathing down my neck it gave me the motivation to push hard for
all 24 hours. I was sad to see N2IC lost power with about 6 hours to go. We
would have had a really close finish. We will have to give this a go again next
year and hope the thunderstorms stay away. Steve was also kind enough to help
Tim and I trouble shoot an issue with N1MM the day before the contest.
Tim and I don't have the collective technical wherewithal to setup the MOAS
magic that NN1C has been working so hard on here. Thus, we leaned on our Seekrit
K6AM Skunkworkz boxes. They prove to be simple and effective in use allowing the
SO3R operation to take place.
The 580' beverages to EU and JA on 40-160m was HUGE. For whatever reason they
really seemed to pop during this contest. I had a great summertime 40m EU run
that may not have been possible without that beverage.
The new 10M 7/7 stack to JA only produced 2 Q's that way, however, it felt like
I would not have been able to get them in the log without them. Looking forward
to more sunspots in the future where we can actually use many of the stacks to
their full potential.
73,
Dan N6MJ
