After a week of phenomenal sporadic-E, including multiple openings on 2m and
double-hop, the bands were in poor shape for the contest weekend. There were a
few brief openings on Saturday, but Sunday was poor for most of the day.
Despite significant effort, my score is a tiny fraction of the past two years'
scores. It looks like the Midwest fared much better propagation-wise.
I operated from three stops: the first stop was my usual stop at Woodall
Mountain in EM54vs. From there, I went to Pickwick Landing State Park in
EM55vb, then returned to my home grid (EM64) via EM65 for the night, then drove
to Leroy Percy State Park in EM43md via EM54 and EM53 to operate Sunday. I had
intended to operate from EM43 until the end of the contest, but poor conditions,
worsening weather, and a complete lack of cell service prompted me to tear down
around 1845Z and head back home.
I had some technical problems at the start caused by trying to get my two-radio
setup working. I had an issue with WSJT-X where the decode button would turn
blue and stay blue on the second instance. I eventually set up a second tablet
to dedicate to 2 meters and used a known good single instance of WSJT-X on the
first tablet to operate 6 meters. However, I lost a good deal of time setting
all of that up at the 11th (and 12th and 13th!) hour.
Due to the lack of propagation, my log is 100% digital -- 72 FT8 QSOs and one
MSK144 QSO. Many more MSK144 QSOs would have been possible on Sunday had more
people been willing to try it. Unfortunately, as previously mentioned, I didn't
have cell service at my EM43 site to be able to announce (within the rules) my
M/S intentions. The next time 50.313 is full of whistles and one-pass wonders,
give MSK144 a try! For this contest, it would have been an easy way to get more
southeastern grids in your log.
