Comments:
We arrived last Saturday and have been in quarantine all week. They came today
during the European opening on 10M to take us to be tested and then came back
this afternoon to cut off our wrist bracelets and take the tracking phone
telling us we were now released from captivity. They came by a few days this
past week to check on our well being and I told them we were fine and could live
in quarantine indefinitely. They did give me permission to work on my antenna
as long as I did not leave the property and I replaced a non working T-2X
rotator with a Yaesu 2800. It worked great with a Green Heron control box.
I have never been too excited about working a phone contest but thought I would
at least work single band 10m or something. I went ahead and put up my vertical
for 40m and made sure I could get on every band to hand out a few contacts even
though I would probably just work single band something. Then a couple days
before the contest I put up a little triangle/flag antenna since I could not get
off the property to sneak up something better and decided to get on all bands.
I had not gotten on the air but for a few minutes mainly to look at the RBN on
10M. Unfortunately something has happened causing a lot of RF to come in from
160m. I hope it is just a bad connector somewhere. The RF was so bad that it
would lock the keyboard and computer and monitor and garbled audio in the
headphones. It would lock the transceiver in the transmit mode so that I had to
turn the radio off to get it to stop. Normally I would have a good number on
160m which I consider to be my best band but it was almost unusable.
I am sure everyone was as excited as I was to hear 10m open again after so many
years. Wow! Saturday afternoon I had an HZ call me on 10M many hours after his
sunset when I would have thought the band to be dead to that area of the world.
If there was an opening on Saturday I missed it and nearly missed the one on
Sunday, not thinking I had to check so early. Another highlight was having 9K2HN
call me on 80M Saturday night through a pretty good pileup.
This contest was a lot of fun! I learned a few things about phone and will be
better prepared to do what needs to be done next time.
