Comments:
An interesting mix of conditions: 15 and 10 put in a decent showing, but 80 and
40 weren’t as strong performers this time around. Overall, we had good
results
on 40, but the conditions into Asia were marginal at times. The lack of a good
JA run on 80 definitely hurt us.
Qs and mults were pretty evenly-spread across 40-15 with solid activity on all
three bands. We achieved DXCC on both 40 and 20 with over 30 zones on all three
bands.
It made for an enjoyable effort, even if we did struggle with technical issues
at times—related, as usual, to remote control. (Mitch was operating locally,
I
was running via remote control.) All the usual gremlins made their appearance.
N1MM logging software on my end had confusion surrounding the country data file
(yes, I downloaded the latest) such that the networked logging score on my end
was giving 3 points to USA contacts and including all USA spots in the band
map. I had to exit/restart N1MM several times after removing and downloading
the country file anew before I got that corrected. And each time I’d
exit/reenter N1MM, it wasn’t remembering some settings—so I had to
reconfigured
selection of macro file and a few other aspects. Add to the mix some glitches
the the remote front-end for Flex (SmartSDR), a brown-out in the middle of
the second night which reset computers at Mitch’s shack and corrupted his
N1MM
ini-file, occasional audio distortion/droo-outs on received audio arriving at
my end, and it was a veritable techno-circus of sorts. My apologies to those
stations who probably wondered about the foolish op who repeatedly asked for
fills on their S9 signals. The state-of-the-art in remote operation is not for
the faint-of-heart. :-)
As has been our norm in the last few M/2 efforts, this was not an intense
effort. Between sleep, and mostly-overlapping breaks, we had at least one
transmitter running during about 42 out of the 48 hours. (N1MM stats
show about 6 hours off, but that only counts time when both transmitters
were inactive.)
It always amazes me just how many countries and zones are active during
this contest. A great opportunity to work some difficult-to-find countries and
zones.
When else can you work DXCC on two bands (40 and 20), 152 countries, and all
40 zones in a weekend? Of course Mitch’s amazing station makes those numbers
possible. Still, all those zones and countries (and more) are active during
this unique 48-hour period.
