I didn't want to stop. Conditions were just that good. I had planned on
operating on site but as the contest neared staying at home and not dealing with
traveling grew more appealing. Thanks to all of the time that Scott, WU2X, has
devoted over the years, the setup was very easy and I couldn't tell that there
was any performance drop off as compared to being on site. I really appreciate
every thing that WU2X and N2QV have put into the station and for letting me play
hooky from reality for a weekend. Using such a fine tuned machine for 48 hours
straight can make a person feel super human. Sort of sucks to come back into
reality and deal with annoying things like laundry and street signs.
160: Signals sounded very good from zone 16 around the 0300z hour. Enough that
it made sense to run a little bit on 160. However, that didn't last long and
the sunrise opening across zones 14 and 15 was flat. I found ZM4T on 80 and
asked him about QSYing to 160. He gave me a frequency and I found myself in a
two man pileup with K5UR (yes, the 160 legend). I hit that F4 key a little bit
harder each time hoping it would help the signal strength but it didn't seem to
make a difference. Rick got the contact and I retreated, licking my wounds.
For the record though, 30 minutes later ZM4T did go into the log.
80: Everyone was loud and seemed to hear well too. I really wanted to break
1,000 Qs. 3B8M called for a double mult at 2358z Sunday evening.
40: Hard to imagine that 40 could have been any better. It opened around an
hour earlier than usual on Saturday afternoon. The early Sunday morning run was
surprising. It was as if a light switch was flipped. Really loud zone 16 guys
were calling which usually doesn't happen around the 0700z time frame. In 2020,
N2IC worked 165 zone 16 stations from N2QV. This year, I worked 284. Near the
end of the contest, I needed P4 on 40 so I got excited when I tuned across a
swarm and heard P44W. I assumed it was John's pile and immediately dumped my
call. The dude that came back sent 21! Ut oh. It turned out to be a new mult
but sadly I never found P4 on 40.
20: Conditions seemed average on 20 meters. But I'll take average east coast
20 meters conditions all day long. 20 opened earlier than usual on Sunday
morning which I figured was a good sign for 10 meters (wrong). It was
surprising to find a loud and lonely BY station around 1800z Sunday morning. I
missed tons of good mults from Asia. JA was runnable both evenings but it just
didn't make sense to leave the EU pileups on the low bands.
15: Great to have 15 meters partially back. Europe was loud and plentiful but
the band closed hard just after EU sunset. KL7RA was super loud but I never
heard a JA. Cool to be called by C9 and 5Z4 in back to back contacts.
10: What a disappointment. I had convinced myself that 10 would be open for a
good hour into EU on Sunday morning. I made the poor decision of leaving loud
EU callers on 20 for dirt weak Italians on 10. Looking forward to doing this
contest when 10 meters is really hopping.
A really, really enjoyable and relaxing radio weekend. Hopefully we can get
back to pre pandemic mult levels. It was close this weekend but still didn't
feel 100% back.
