I have done this contest from ZF1A the previous 6 years, and the plan was for me
to operate from there again this year. Unfortunately the island remained
closed, so I would have been stuck operating remote again. Remote is ok, but I
really wanted to be onsite somewhere. I floated the idea to Kam that maybe I
would operate from TI7W and he didn't say no. Over the next few months the plan
came together and I was able to operate onsite from here. It was a great
decision as Kam is a super host and the station is just amazing. I feel super
loud on all bands and I can hear really well, there is virtually no noise at
all. When I first arrived the pesky noise towards JA was there but by contest
time it was also gone and never came back.
With TI being slightly rarer than ZF, I enjoyed the fact that most of the tough
mults called me instead of having to find them. I did a full 48 hours of 2BSIQ,
and I had the 3rd radio available for tuning but I did very little of it. The
pileups were just that much bigger from here that it was hard to find any time
for tuning for mults.
Conditions were good this year, but not great and certainly not record breaking.
I could tell leading in that 10m was not going to cooperate and it ended up
being even worse than I thought. I only worked a small handful of EU and the
conditions were spotty to NA. I was really hoping that this year would be the
record breaking year then I could retire.. but the chase goes on. I might have
one more year left in me.. these 48 hour events are just brutal on my body.
Both Chris and I have been floating around the 400 Q mark for years now, but we
knew that we havent maxed out the rate just yet as those hours all still had
lost of CQing involved. I think the rate has finally been maxed out now... I
had a 453 hour on Saturday Morning during a brief 10m opening. There was no
CQing, just pure rate on both radios non stop.
