Comments:
Friday evening was all CA except a couple meteor scatter Qs to the north and
AA6AA in NV. With conditions so dismal I went home before 0300Z.
I missed early Saturday morning as my car battery died and I had to wait for AAA
to check and then replace it. K3EST's report is reassuring as Bob worked only 9
Qs in the first 2 of the 3 hours I missed. After I finally got on at 1700Z a
spotlight traced from ME and QC, west to ON and down to FL and GA over the next
2+ hours. I mostly stayed on CW and by the time I got to SSB I missed many of
the states I'd worked on CW.
Afternoon was mostly South America and AZ/NM/CA with a few WA. After a couple of
hours of single-digit rates I went home for dinner at 0100Z. I returned a couple
hours later and there were several loud Colorado stations and weaker signals
from a broad swath of states east of the Mississippi River but none further
north than MO/IL/IN/OH/VA (except for K3UA at K3LR in PA and one MD). Later the
opening extended further west to OK, NE and TX. Several 7th call area states
that I was missing - MT/ID/UT - were worked after 0600.
Sunday morning I arrived at the shack at 1430 with the band already open. Mostly
9's and 8's but then the opening shifted west to include IA and MO and
eventually MN, which was a new mult for me. Several WY also called. I tried
moving to SSB but couldn't get anyone to answer my CQs and continued on CW.
Finally I had a few runs on SSB but I'd hit a dry spell after 10 or 20 minutes
and go back to CW.
Shortly after 2000Z most of the activity was gone, with South America and
AZ/CO/NM remaining, as on Saturday. I beamed the Pacific, hoping to work ZL or
VK or possibly JA on a skew path but heard none of them. Instead I heard and
worked KL7SB whom I hadn't heard when beaming north but maybe was working on
backscatter or a skew path toward ZL. I had to QRT at 2300 for a social
obligation but seems like I didn't miss much in that final hour.
On CW I worked all states except DE, ND and DC. Canada was sparse except for
VE3, working only VE2/3/5/7/9. Only CW DX were XE2S in Mexico, ZF5T and the
usual 4 common South Americans - CE/CX/LU/PY.
On SSB I missed quite a few states, working all of the states in the 2/4/8/9
call areas, but missing most of the 7th. Canada was only VE3. DX was the same 4
South American countries as on CW plus FY who called me.
The only mults I heard but missed were OA4SS, who I called on CW on two
occasions but he continued CQing, and NP2X, who faded out just as I tried
calling. Never heard the V5s and FR everyone else worked.
Thanks for all the repeats, particularly with the meteor scatter Qs. The ARRL
log submission robot gave me an extra mult, probably the NP3 in Colorado.
73,
-Mike, N7MH
