Soapbox :
Station survived a decent windstorm the day before the contest.
Then the day of the test, my temporary 160M shielded loop blew over
when a rope let go when the winds shifted from the South to the
West. No big deal had it back in position in less than 5 minutes.
Tightened up the ropes on the dipoles, set up N1MM+, ready to go!
Started on 20M with some good DX. First night 160 and 40 were
stellar but 80 was a bit of a disappointment. One small 29Q
run between 0400-0500Z on 80. Took a 3 hour sleep break 0800Z-1100Z
when the rates were around 10/hr.
Best runs the first day were between 1200Z - 1700Z with rates
generally about 80/hr. At 24 hours had 760 contacts in the log.
I've learned to take a break around the 24 hour mark for
a couple of hours, the environment is such that I've worked
pretty much all the ones I can work, I can't get attention
calling CQ and anything on the band usually has big pig
piles on it. It is just not worth the aggravation. This time
the break was 0141Z to 0339Z, so 2 hours. Came back
after a quick nap and all is good again...
Sunday rates were better overall, generally 120/hr. Really
cool when I had a JA come in over Europe while running at
1555Z. That hasn't happened at my station in a long time.
Wow, though, Sunday morning I got on the bands by 1130Z after
a 4 hour break. I swept some dx on the low bands then found
a run frequency on 20. Now, at this point I've just about
finished a cup of coffee and should have been good to go but
the first half hour or so of running, I was a complete mess
copying calls. So rough. The brain fog finally passed and
had really good runs for several hours including one
lonely 5Q minute.
Beyond all of that, 10M provided some good surprises. Got to
give the guys at YM2KK props, so many unanswered CQs. I can
only imagine they were in a high noise environment. Finally
worked them on 15M Sunday right on the band edge.
I had 12 6-Banders, including Hawaii. 26 5-Banders and 32 4-Banders.
If only 10M had opened into Europe even for just an hour. A
couple of new DX, HL on 40M Saturday morning and Z60 on 15 Sunday.
N1MM says 34 hours but I had Qs in 41 of the 48. I've come to
conclude 34 - 36 hours is all my station can support without some
antenna improvements. It was nice to have Northern Europe/Scandinavia
back in force for a change.
