Comments:
Well that was fun. Conditions the first 24 hours were fantastic. 20 and 15 were
open all night to JA and deep Asia. We had 1400 Qs in the first 24. the same #
as the whole contest last year. The second 24 was another story. Conditions
deteriorated. 15 and 20 were a small fraction of the first night. The low bands
were affected too. The high MUF the first night keep a lot of action on 15 and
20 away from 40. Still we had almost 400 Qs the first night on 40. Ken, N6RO had
a new toy on 80 meters. A dipole at 135 feet. It played exceptionally well. A
highlight was working Robert, 9N7AA on 20 and VU2MV on 15. Congratulations to
JT1CO. His signal was there all the time and on Sunday when prop was poor he was
the only Asian heard on 15. Special shout out to Roberto, K6KM and Steve, K6AW
who endured the deteriorated condition especially during the day on Sunday on 20
and 15. 20 and 15 really were night time bands. From 1700z-2200z both bands were
practically dead.
A few stats illustrates this fact:
1500z-2059z = 23 QSOs day 1
1500-2059 = 14 QSOs day 2
Total of 37 QSOs for 12 hours of work!
Thanks to the ops who made the Qs: N6RO, K3EST, WU6P, WA6O and K6KM on site with
WX5S and K6AW remote.
Thanks to Ken, N6RO for hosting a fun AA MM.
Band comments:
160: N6RO On Sunday about 5 AM, I made the first of six Qs on 160m, starting
with the reliable JA5DQH. The opening was about 20 minutes long, until the Sun
turned on the absorption. Great teamwork and BIC in the contest. No equipment
failures, remote work fine.
80: N6RO first night, WU6P second night
On the first night was the first chance to see how well the new 80 ant worked
long haul. Playing with the new JK801 dipole and making at least one Q on 160m
was my thing in the contest. JK801 exceeded expectations. There was less
interference from 80m harmonic to 40m, using the dipole and Flex. I got no
complaints from the 40m ops. working at 3512/14. It was a pleasure to work 110
JAs the first night. On the second night, the new antenna continued to play
well. The band condition on 80m was ok with some popping noise sometimes as
usual.
40: WA6O first night, WX5S second night The first night 40 opened later than
usual and did not going until the 0700z hour. Second night: Band opened later
than it did in previous year. It also closed earlier. We had really good rate
on the first night and I was expecting to do well, but the condx just weren't
there. Based upon how many Russians spotted on 15m, I was expecting to hear/work
more than usual on 40m, but that also did not work out - less than usual was the
rule. Overall Q total on 40m was behind last year's total.
20: K3EST 0000-0700z, 1400-1900z Sat., 0700-1300z Sun, WU6P 0700-1400z, K6AW
1400-0700z, 1900-2359 Sun; K6KM 1300-1900z Sun.
The band was poor until about 0430z when it suddenly opened well to Japan and
UA9/0. The good activity continued until midnight. After midnight the band
condition was ok. The run rate is not great, but it always there trickling
keeping a double digits hourly rate. Judging from last year’s history, we 20
was good all night. Sunday: signals very, very weak after 1600z.
15: WX5S 0000-1200z Sat; K3EST 1300-0700z Sun , K6KM 1900-0000z Sun 15m: Start
of contest: First 15 min was great then it took the next 45 min to make that
many Q's again then band died until our sunset. It opened to YB and then moved
north to include JA and had consistent rate until about 1.5 hours after Tokyo
sunset. Lots of Russians were spotted, but I only heard/worked a few. During
0400Z hour, band was open to the Middle East (worked a 4X1), OH (saw on RBN) and
simultaneously open to JT (worked JT1CO).
10: WU6P: The Propagation God controls everything through band conditions. On
10m, Friday at the beginning, I burned quite a lot of amplifier power, and got 0
points. Saturday I got 3 QSOs on 10m after a hard push…that is 50% more than
last year. Sunday at the ending of the contest, the band opened and we got 30
more QSOs. One more comment on 10m. In majority time of the contest, the 10m Q
rate was extremely low. RBN showed signal did not reach Japan but it reached VK
many times with good SN report. So I went out of the shack to check if the
antenna was pointed in the right direction. Yes, it was pointed in the right
direction: 305.
