Comments:
Last year I had to quit 3 hours early when I got too drowsy to continue and the
caffeine hit from my single cup of coffee was needed to safely drive home. My
revised plan for 24-hour BIC this year - don't sleep in on Friday to be
well-rested, it prevented me from falling asleep until after midnight; prepare
the station during the day on Friday so I can sleep in until 4 a.m. instead of
3, for the 5 a.m. contest start. 3 hours of sleep before a 24-hour radio
marathon was not enough.
The execution of this plan was only slightly disrupted by the request on Tuesday
before the contest of my daughter for her 3 children to spend the weekend with
my wife and me while she and her husband took a mini-vacation to Las Vegas. Such
bad timing, but my wife somehow agreed to be responsible for them all day
Saturday if I would deal with them on Friday.
I got 5 hours of sleep, arrived at the station 10 minutes before the start,
turned on and checked everything, and started on time. 2BSIQ on 40 and 80 was
not producing much on 80. The two Asian HQ stations I could hear had big pileups
of other Asians and I wasted time calling both of them. Note for next year...
wait until the end of the contest to work them when they're begging for Qs.
I should have skipped 80 at the start to begin on 40 and 20. The first 4 hours
were over 150 per hour but after that I only had 2 more hours over 100.
After those first few hours the noise got louder and signals weaker. When I went
to 10 there were some loud signals on the band but few were there and I didn't
get many answers.
In the early evening I tuned across 40 to try to get EU zones and HQs. I CQed
for a short time there but decided to check 15 and found some EU HQs I'd missed
during the daylight hours. Signals were fairly strong so I did 2BSIQ on 15 and
20 to EU. There was still bad noise that forced me to give up on a few weak
callers who just could not be copied with the auroral flutter compounded by the
noise.
One caller had a really mushy signal from the flutter, even though strong enough
to copy some characters, I got LZ and Q. After many go-arounds the mushiness
went away and I clearly copied him send LZ3QE and something to the effect of SRI
GIVING UP. There had been a second caller, same frequency and signal strength.
Unfortunately LZ3QE really had left by the time I sent my exchange several
times.
I had 3 or 4 EU callers who thought I had gotten their callsigns wrong. I was
fairly certain I had them right and we went back and forth sending the same
callsign. Finally I slowed down from 28 wpm to 22 and in every case that ended
the dispute. I don't recall ever having to go through more than one repeat of a
caller's callsign so it was bizarre that it happened several times. Must have
been the flutter.
Around 0700 I rotated to JA/Asia. Our only rotatable antennas for 15 and 20
currently are on the same mast so both 20 and 15 rotated to JA. I was getting no
callers on 15 so I switched to 40 which was open to Asia. I went to 80 briefly
but rate there was slow. Tried 160 and discovered high SWR on the TX antenna
whose coax seemed to be in the expected position on the switch. Didn't hear a
peep on the Beverages so decided not to waste time investigating 160.
At 0900 I began to feel quite drowsy and heated up and drank the coffee I'd
brought with me. The caffeine did its job and I had no problem finishing the
contest.
Thanks for the Qs. Sorry to those I couldn't copy through the noise.
73,
-Mike, N7MH
