Comments:
Well, there went another one. We had a great time!
We had a small, but great crew for this one. Four were on site and four remote.
Starting at the low bands we had.
160 K0RF
80 W0UA K0RF
40 KV0Q NT6X(remote)
20 W0UA W0ZP(remote)
15 K4EA(remote) W1XE
10 N5OT(remote)
160 was terrible here. Did manage a couple EU stations, 5 JAs and HL5IVL.
80 produced a lot of copyable EU stations but they just couldn't hear us.
George came over both nights to share the pain after 20M became a one-person
band. JA was pretty good and then came the Asians that simply couldn't hear us.
Ugh!
40 meters kept Bill and Mike busy but no really good European runs were to be
had. Then about the middle of the Sunday JA run, Bill came over and told me that
the 40 meter 3 ele had gone quiet. He had to finish the run with the low 2 ele
and the RBN could tell the difference. Mike, NT6X joined us for the first time
this year and did a great job on the second radio from his CA home.
20 meters was handily manned by the established team of George and Wayne.
George continues to be second to none on putting stations in the log quickly
even with Wayne searching and pouncing on the same band. This is really tough
when the callers are weak with echo and flutter.
15, manned by Neal, K4EA from his home station remote and George, W1XE here at
the shack did a fabulous job considering that except for JA and Pacific time the
second radio was limited to 100 watts because with the second beam pointed in
the Eastern direction it trashed the remote connections on all the bands. I'm
going to have to relocate something.
10 meters, single operated by Mark, N5OT weas a nice change from the last few
years in spite of less than favorable solar numbers. He dogged that band and
swept up a lot of mults. The first DXCC year in a few.
Had quite a few problems this time but managed to keep going until fixes could
be made. Clothed in my Walls Overalls I managed to climb the 20M stack and the
40M towers to fix problems that arose at the feed points. I feel blessed that I
can still do this in my 80th year. Although, I must admit that I didn't scramble
up the 40M tower in the dark and snow to restore Bill's big 40. I waited until
sunup.
The problems were not limited to the contest period. The week before had 4
amplifier failures, all but one fixed. Luckily, George persisted to convince me
that he should tear down his Alpha 87 and bring it up here as a spare. Good
thing too because in the middle of the EU run on 15, the blower quit on the 15M
amp. Just as George had planned, we went out to his trusty "Exploder"
and brought in the amp and set it in place of my 3-1000 amp where it stood and
saved the day for the rest of the contest.
Again, my trusted partner, W0UA made a lot of what we accomplished possible by
making the trip every day during the week and 1/2 before the test to be my
ground crew while I climbed every tower except the 15m to fix things that were
not working properly. THANKS GEORGE. All that and still a top 5 competitor in CW
SS. Not bad for an old guy.
K4EA has taken the position of IT geek (his words) and I am sure happy about
that. He is very knowledgeable in that realm to my great fortune since I am not.
I was able to tap his energy and assistance at every hour of the day or night
during the preparation and set up.
This was the first M/M contest since K7NV became a silent key. We all miss him.
Kurt, I'm sure you were supervising from another place and I hope you approved
of our effort.
I feel very blessed to still be in the game after all these years. I hope the
Good Lord keeps me going for many more.
Thanks to all participants for being there and making contesting the fabulous
game that it is.
