Comments:
This was my 3rd 160 meter contest operation this season from Stonington Point CT
operating as a mobile using an old school 2 MHz marine band 12.5 foot helically
loaded boat whip and a small base loading matching network to resonate it in the
160 meter band. Mounted on a 2012 Tacoma 4x4, 100 watts with IC-7100 mobile
transceiver. No external radials were used, just the truck body as the
counterpoise. Location was in the parking lot at the tip of Stonington Point in
southeast Connecticut. Parked about 10 feet from the salt water all around from
the northeast to northwest, with 100 miles of Long Island Sound to the west, and
open Atlantic ocean from southwest to east.
Conditions were much better than in the ARRL 160 Meter Contest earlier this
month. Thanks to all who dug into the noise to pull out my mobile signal,
especially the guys at KH6AQ, too bad you couldn't completely copy my call, you
would have been my best 160 DX QSO from the mobile so far. Was able to hold a
frequency pretty well and had some good long CQ runs. Was interesting to hear
how well signals far to the west were still very strong an hour after local
sunrise here Sunday morning. Merry Christmas to all and see you in the Spring
Stew!
