Our 160m CW Team was again very happy to honor Gene Walsh, N2AA, by using his
call during the 2023 CQ160 CW. We will continue to do so for years to come.
Gene was an original member of our 160 CW Team 36 years ago.
We apologize to our EU friends from being almost deaf the first night. It
became obvious within minutes of the start our EU beverage (two 310 meter long
elements phased) had catastrophically failed. In searching for an alternative rx
solution, we discovered the low dipole strung in tree branches 8 feet off the
ground (an antenna we rarely use) was capable of hearing most callers including
EU. Signals were way down, but it was something to work with overnight. We
logged 231 ten point contacts, mostly EU using the dipole. On Saturday after
breakfast the EU system was disassembled and components checked end to end.
Never found the "smoking gun" failure point but highly suspect it was
one of several barrel connectors in the 600 foot feedline. Saturday night the
EU beverage worked perfectly but the band didn't cooperate.
Compounding our reception problems, the Hi-Z Four system was inoperative and
unavailable as a backup or for diversity reception. Despite nearly 20 man hours
of diagnostic effort added with guidance from K7TJR spread over multiple site
visits, we could not find the reason the system had low signal output.
For the first 30 minutes of the contest at our sunset we were under an
absorption cloud. All signals were inexplicably weak, average S-3 to S-4 but
perfectly readable. The absorption dissipated by 2300 but it seemed quite odd.
The 181 first hour (including 14 EU and P40AA) was our best hour of the weekend.
After discovering the low dipole could actually hear EU signals better than the
NE beverage, it became the antenna of choice for several hours, significantly
reducing the need to turn the beverage selection knob. Conditions were markedly
better the first night both toward EU and the west coast although we couldn't
really tell since it was still a struggle for us ... "letter mining"
was in effect as signals road the QSB waves. We aggressively sought out ten
pointers and multipliers as we always do ... often working them through loud US
stations that had no idea they were hidden on their frequency. This lead to
some confusion at times as you might expect.
Most States and Provinces seemed well represented, with the exceptions of DC and
North Dakota. We got excited working AC5XK early in the contest since he's
normally in DC BUT the MA report that came back took away the joy.
At sunrise on Saturday our totals were 1010q 58s and 59c. We found just another
seven countries the second night. Never heard VK, ZL or JA all weekend but three
KH6s were logged. Heard KL7SB briefly the second night but no joy.
The growth in Scoreboard continues and we find following the efforts of fellow
Multi-op teams and Single Op competitors enhances the contest experience. It
was fascinating to watch the horse races develop and leads pass back and forth.
Congrats to the K1LZ and K1RX Teams in ME for an outstanding efforts, and to the
K3LR Team for most spirited competition.
Thanks to all the stations who called us. We hope you had as much fun as our
team did.
We greatly appreciate the continued hosting each year of our 160 meter contest
activities by the owners of WYRS-FM. A tall tower in a salt marsh is not a
resource to be wasted.
Hope to work everyone again next 160 season.
73,
John, W2GD
