Comments:
With the high solar flux index I knew that 40m was not the best place to hang
out this weekend but I did not expect it to get as slow as it did during the wee
hours of the morning. The contest started off great. I made 97 QSOs during the
first hour and 73 QSOs during the second and third hours. But in the early
morning hours I struggled to make 20 QSOs in an hour. The band was wide open
however everyone was in bed resting up for the great 10m and 15m openings that
would occur later in the day. The local weather had been sunny in the upper
60’s but as luck would have it a cold rain moved in on Friday evening and
stayed for the entire weekend. This rain caused some QRN throughout the contest.
At times my upper beam was too noisy to use and on two occasions the rain static
became so bad that I left the radio room and watched TV. I made one setup
blunder, apparently I had filters blocking a lot of my DX spots so I missed some
easy multipliers. I am not well versed in operating assisted but I doubt I will
let that happen again. All things considered, I am happy with my score. The
station worked perfectly and it was fun trying out my newly installed 4el 40m
beams.
Thanks for the QSOs,
John KK9A
