Comments:
Much appreciated that the world turns its antennas to the US for this one.
Another in-person/remote hybrid, graciously hosted by our fearless leader, Ken
N6RO. This time we had two remotes and five in-person operators, including
K6AW who travelled 6 hours from southern California.
We decided to use the shiny new call of Dave ex-W6DMW, to give "KM6O"
a chance to sing and find its way into numerous logs, as well as to inspire Dave
to continue improving his CW. He also stoped by and made a couple of Q's.
The station played well, but we had some op errors affecting the top 20m beam
and wrong settings in some CONFIG files (which we fixed during the contest).
Thanks to Chris N6WM for pre-contest shake-out and NA6O for real-time
debugging.
Band conditions? With ops focused on their particular band, it's like ancient
parable of the blind men and the elephant. Impressions depend on what part of
the animal you touch. Here are some of them...
* 10m - K3EST
: "Ten was back big time! Europe and Asia were plentiful and the band
stayed open past 7 local and opened at 630 local. Nice to work 9N7AA and
XZ2B."
* 15m - WD6T and K7GK
: Friday evening (WD6T) - "Decent Asian activity, with JA peaking at
their noon, and a nice variety of countries. Last Q at 8:30 local."
: Saturday (K7GK) - "Bit of a shaky start, with bad traffic, then the
issue with CONFIGs. After a short scramble, I was making contacts using a
different position, a testament to the adaptability of the station. The band was
open to EU and I was able to start a run. My first full hour was the best
single-band rate of the entire contest and a lot of fun. The extrordinarily-good
EU opening lasted about 3 hours. Nice to be called by a Corsican station, a
first for me."
: Sunday (WD6T) - "Second day had another great EU opening with plenty of
callers, though fewer pileups, and lots of unanswered CQs. Was working
Europeans several hours after their sunset. The last four horus were extremely
slow with some "feeding frenzy" moments when a mult would appear.
South American signals seemed weaker than usual and less activity."
* 20m - K6AW (w/relief from WD6T)
: "Band conditions great--maybe too great on 15 and 10 so there were not
so many Q’s and mults available on 20. It was great fun to have such enhanced
conditions."
* 40m - WU6P early shift, WX5S late shift
: (WX5S) "Conditions were better than average on the first night. WU6P
started and there were 65 mults when I took over at 0500z. Very nice opening to
the British Isles after the main EU opening. VU heard faintly but not worked.
Ended first night with 92 mults and thought 100 looked doable, but second night
conditions noticably worse. Kudos to CN8WW who hung in with me for about 6
“over’s:. Lots of ESP level Q’s with very low power guys on second
night."
* 80m and 160m - WU6P and N6RO (w/relief from WD6T)
: (N6RO) "I started Friday at our sunset, grey-line prop allowed about 20
EU on 80m. EU was still workable when WU6P took over at 0530z. At our SR I
logged an LP Russian - R7. These good openings did not repeat on Saturday eve.
160 was usable to Carib, but never heard spotted EU either night. 160 JA total
was a respectable 57 Qs, better than I expected. No SA AF,VK or ZL on topband.
: (WU6P) :"Fortunately we have JAs, as the low bands heavily depend on
them from W6 land. 2nd night we have quite a few hours at very low rates. Good
loud JA signals on 80, but most 160m JAs needed a lot of repeats to dig out of
the noise."
General consensus: We hope these high-band conditions are here to stay for a few
years, though we miss the low bands of a few years ago.
Thanks for the Qs! Statistics are below.
