Comments:
Fun contest! I decided to try this one from the home QTH, where I am much more
antenna-challenged than I usually find myself when OP'ing at WA3EKL es N3DPB. I
definitely have a lot more to do before I have a proper home contesting station,
but the results from this test are just enough to inspire confidence that I can
get out when I have to!
Many thanks to the XYL for letting me use her laptop, configuring it to run
N1MM+ with the 7610 rig. Every time I want to reconfigure the laptop to switch
between N1MM+ or WSJT-x, it's a lot of frobbing random knobs on both the rig and
the computer-software end. One of these days I'll figure out half of what these
settings mean and if there's a way to pacify both software packages, but not
today!
I started /way/ late in the game, after finally deciding to give it a go, and I
wasn't sure if I would be able to make much of a showing. To my surprise, I
found myself quickly knocking off many of the louder stations, and even some of
the quieter ones. After gaining a bit of confidence in the station's
performance, I decided to try running a little bit......... nope, swing and a
miss. I think I made one single QSO while running. I probably could have done
better if I were more patient, but I found that jumping on loud stations was a
lot more productive than hoping a DX station would pick me out of the noise. Not
to mention, one of the times I tried running, a louder station quickly took my
frequency. ... did I mention how much I missed OP'ing at a bigger station?
Near the end of the test, I was cruising along on 20 meters when I noticed an
abnormal number of Qs reported on 10 meters. I switched over to 10 and right
away heard a JA loud and clear---to my surprise, they heard me, too! Another
surprising Q (for me at this station) was Kenya: I could just barely make them
out, so I was surely under the noise for them.
