This year was different than the past few. I made just a three week trip to be
on site with W5SJ for the contest and to work on a new tower installation
instead of being here for several months with Rita. K4UEE had planned to be
here as well but was unable to make the trip. VE9AA had planned to operate via
remote along with W1VE but was unable. We hope to see both Bob and Mike next
year. Bill and I were on site and Gerry (W1VE) operated via remote. We didn't
have a schedule and just winged it throughout the contest as to who would at any
given time. It worked out fine and we all enjoyed the contest working together
as a team. Thanks to Gerry for all the work to make the remote thing work well!
There was a little drama when my main computer failed a few days before the
contest. I took it to the only place I know that works on computers. The
technician greeted me at the door, took the computer apart on the store front
sales counter, logically diagnosed where the problem was and fixed it in about
30 minutes. When I reached for my wallet he waved me off and said there would
be no charge. I love Cayman Brac. The only other problem was that the main
tri-bander failed on Saturday. The rest of the day was filled with trying other
alternatives which did not work out and Sunday I climbed the tower and fixed the
problem which looks like it was corrosion on balun connections. I could not see
a problem and replaced the choke. Despite the unwanted effects, I love salt
water.
Thanks to everyone who called our little, low power seaside station. We had fun
and hope you did as well.
