Wow!!!
Another semi-FD style effort from Central MT.
MAJOR thanks to Mike, K7NT, for coming over and working very hard to help get
things going again on all bands. We put in two very long days to be QRV.
Getting the 72 foot mast and 5 wire antennas into the air was a major
accomplishment. Final setup was complete around 2340z Friday.
We didn't complete any of the extra projects, but the main stuff was good to
go.
Lost 20 minutes when the generator shut off due to a low oil warning. Will add
mid-contest oil level check to the list of things to do. Lost another hour plus
when the SWR went bad on the high bands around 20z. Looking outside I saw the
Spiderbeam folded in half. It popped back up, but the winds were just too much
for it. During this inspection it was noticed that the mast was slipping inside
the mast clamp. That explains why we were not able to work any SA mults on
Sunday. We thought it was just weird conditions! We dropped the mast and
lashed the antenna at about 15 feet to JA around 2100z in prep for the JA high
band runs.
The bands were just amazing. So many great QSO's!
M/S is a really great category, if restrictive. A full SOAB effort would have
been a much higher QSO total, that's for sure!
Multi op is the best. It was really great operating with my life long family
friend, Mike, K7NT.
I never thought anyone would want to brave the winter in rural MT to help
operate. We had a really fabulous time! After a multiple year break from
serious operating, he is getting his groove back.
The small antennas perform above their weight class at this QTH for sure. No
illusions about how bad things would be with less sunspots. Hopefully we have
towers and aluminum in the air by then to even things out. I lost count of the
mults we heard but could not work, but I estimate it is around 40 or 50. There
was at least 10 in the last couple of hours that we could not work with the
antenna fixed to JA. Just not enough oomph to get through..........yet.
We loved having the scoreboard going. It was really fun chasing AA7A for the
first 24 hours. We passed them once for about a millisecond, but could not keep
up after that.
Major congratulations to Nate, N4YDU. His performance at TI7W is jaw dropping.
Those first 3 hours are what dreams are made of. Hard work and practice
definitely paid off in a huge way.
Really great to hear the big(ger) 8P5A signal on the air again! A super battle
between two great stations and ops.
The ZF1A guys did OK too, I guess.
