I thought the higher frequency bands were down from the past few weeks. I had to
make more second and third calls, along with having problems with decoding.
Tried different antennas and they all seemed to be below par. Things got better
once I moved down to 40-meters. I managed to work Sam (W4PK) on two bands. I
heard Ken (K4XL) right when I powered up the radio on 10-meters, but never
again. Also, I decoded Harry (N3MM) one time and thats all I remember for the
locals. I did bring up the Contestonlinescoreboard.com to the PVRC Yardhogs
team and watch the four sending reports. I have to admit that I had K4XL in my
sights, but he kept inching ahead. I knew he was QRP and I was running 10 times
more power, but if he was having trouble like I was, I might keep up. I had to
stop for a nap in the afternoon, so I took a nap when the Baylor and Texas game
was on the TV. I still don't know who won. Later in the evening, I noticed Ken
had stopped adding to his score and I start inching toward him. I stayed the
duration and manage to get 244 QSOs all S&P. Didn't catch Ken, but I got
him on multipliers and went over his score. That might be the only time I
manage that with a BIC time of about the same as Ken. There is no approaching
Sam's standards without a major rework of my techniques, skill and body. I had
fun.
