In 2005 the Azores-Finland Friendship Consortium was founded under the watchful
eyes of the diplomatic corps, led by Fernando, CU2BV (SK) the Finnish Consul to
Azores along with the Azorian oldest ham operator Jacinto, CU2AA with Jose,
CU2CE and another Jose, CU2AP and the Finnish delegation of Martti, OH2BH/CU2KG,
Juha, OH8NC/CU2KH and Toni,OH2UA/ CU2KI.
During the years since 2005 the team built one of the most advanced contest
stations in Europe, CR2X, on hilltop at 350 ft above the sea level on the North
Coast of the San Miguel Island and soon captured all major CW/SSB/RTTY EU
records in the CQ WW and ARRL DX Contests. Totally fifteen (15) EU records
including ARRL DX Contest SOAB, all 6-band single-bands, on both modes, and
multi-multi on SSB. Their farewell multi-multi record of 2016 still stands today
and used latest technology and advanced station automation.
The ARRL DX SSB 2023 was to be dedicated to review the CR2X 20+ years old M2
customized antennas which faithfully did their job for past years under the
severe Atlantic salt spray. No doubt a maintenance effort would be needed soon
but yet the team managed to activate the station this past weekend and achieve
an European win in the multi-single category.
This year’s “return to your roots” ARRL SSB contest was operated with the
callsign CU2AA in the honor of Jacinto, 86-years of age, who bravely visited the
hilltop location with 4WD together with his son, Francisco, CU2DX and grandsons
Caetano and Bartolomeu to greet the operating team and remember the original
gathering some 20 years ago.
