Comments:
The CQ WPX contests are always fun at N6RO. Food, snacks, sodas sake etc.. This
time we used the contest to start orientation with a couple of new operators,
continued development of a couple more, and brought together veterans as well.
Overall we had a slightly higher score than last year, and slightly higher qso
totals, but the band distributions of qsos and prefixes were totally different.
The solar event that hit our blue planet approaching the contest left us with a
mixed bag of propagation. some good {upper bands) and some bad.. (lower
bands).
We have some antenna damage from high winds last couple weeks, that has left our
top 20m intermittent, our top 10 unable to rotate, and our 80 4sq out of biz.
80 quads were also damaged, but N6WM and N6RO were able to cobble them back
together as we approached the contest.here is how it went for the team.
10M - Bob K3EST Captain and solo.
Bob showed us all how its done. he is a force to be reckoned with. and did 100%
of all 10m qsos.. exceeding 2000 qsos. start of contest to band close was farly
good. Saturday was lack luster despite yielding many qsos. Sunday propagation
was improved, including 3 X Israel, all vy loud, and a skew path EU opening
including some EU answers to cq.
15M - Chris N6WM Captain, and K8TR and KE8FT Sunday for a few hours with N6WM
guidance.
Contest start to band close Friday was very good and productive to Asia Pac.
Saturday AM yielded a fair opening to EU and access to their precious (to us on
the west coast) prefixes. There was qsb and indications of unsettled condx all
day but we were able to do ok. Sunday EU opening was fantastic, getting
comments of VERY LOUD! and with that came a nice EU run and more prefixes. most
of the EU in the contest was worked on 15.
20M - K6AW Captain, and KK6PXT.
We were having trouble getting traction on 20. Steve brought in his K4
transceiver, and condx were not the best, but good dx was worked. KK6PXT seemed
to really enjoy operating the K4 helping out on the band.
40M WX5S Captain and primary night op, KE8FT and K8TR keeping the candle lit
during the day.
WX5S says Cndx into EU on Friday were non-existent and that really hurt the
point count. The poor prop was undoubtedly due to the sky-high A and K. However
activity in Asia seemed good on Friday although a big struggle with weak
signals. Cndx improved on Sat, but activity was down - lots of stations operated
just one night
80M KO6M captain with special evening guest star N6RO
KO6M Says: Friday night was a noisy but workable all night. The noise floor was
a solid S7 all night Saturday. Then increasing to an S9 just before sunset.
CY0S was elusive both nights but I heard them ever so faintly on Saturday but
they couldn’t pull me out of the noise on their end. Bested our score last
year by over 100 qsos. 99% of that was the new 80m dipole. Thank you Ken for
starting both nights.
N6RO Says: T-storm static was extreme Friday eve, but EU was heard in between
crashes. first night I logged CN, CR6 CT3 D4, but no SA. Saturday eve the
static was down until about 06z, the only DX heard and wkd was V26. DaveW took
over around midnight both nights logging every possible JA. Used the high
dipole exclusively.
160M - N6RO Captain
Ken says: 160 both nights: 38 Qs friday, only 2 on Saturday. A new power line
noise at S9+ ruined topband RX, plus low activity and poor prop. Humbug!
Overall we all had fun.. and thats the name of the game. We added to our op
team, and that is a win all around.
Thanks for the QSOS!! so fun to work our Contesting brothers and sisters around
the world.
our entire team thanks Ken N6RO for the use of the station, dinner sat night and
overall wisdom. thanks to all who brought food and snacks for the team. we all
look forward to the next major cq contest.
73 and seeya soon!
For the entire NR6O team
