Cushcraft A50-5S 5 el yagi up 20 feet with no rotator. I get out of the chair
and get some exercise going outside in the heat to turn the antenna whenever the
sporadic e propagation moves.
I was very pleased to see plenty of activity on CW and SSB during the contest. I
wish activity would come back on 6m outside of the contests.
I also fondly remember back in the 1ate 1960's and early 1970's before 2m
repeaters stole the show when 6m was an active rag chewer's band in the
Philadelphia-South Jersey area. Then, usually in the summer it was spiced up by
voices from afar who came out of the ether and broke into our conversations.
Bedlam ensued, while "DX" contacts took over. Defined as rapidly
working W0's, W5's and W4's before the e skip suddenly went away again after
about an hour. 6m was a fun place to be. Additionally, VHF UHF experimentation
was the frontier of ham radio.
By 1972 or 1973, 6m was silent (except during contests) as everyone had moved to
2m repeaters and hung out with those they already knew.
Perhaps, the wonderful ragchew band that was, can be restored to 6m, instead of
only chasing spots or watching waterfalls?
See you on 6m for Field Day and again in the CQ VHF Contest in July. Thank you
all for the QSOs and especially to those who made the effort to set up as Rovers
or fixed in the rare grid square of your choice. Due in part to your efforts, I
was able to pick up 14 new grid squares from you from my Texas QTH where I have
lived since September 2014.
