Seems to me if you spend a few grand on a piece of equipment it should
work. It should not be a learning experience. Homebrewing is the
place to learn something.
I've done both. Homebrewed an amp in which I learned more than I
planned, and bought some gear.

Half of the fun with a new amplifier is fixing design problems. If you
fix the tank design oversights on 40m and 160m, you will learn something.
Is this not better than being a vegitative appliance operator?
Remember: there is no perfect amplifier.
