I've used one once in a HV supply, with a snubber (series R -C) across
it. It failed - short circuit. Possibly a mains spike. I prefer big,
heavy duty DC relays - no 50Hz buzz - and have had greater reliability.
Having said that, solid state relays work very well in industrial
applications with all their spikes etc. I think I'd still want a relay
for galvanic isolation.
