Applied Microwave and Wireless magazine here in the states is showing
promise as more than just a trade pub, with Gary Breed as publisher,
formerly from RF Design Magazine. I believe that he might be a ham also. RF
Design used to be the premier monthly that covered all sorts of good stuff,
including a lot on solid state power amplifier design. In recent years, it
has fluttered trying to cater to many areas.
The latest Applied Microwaves and Wireless (April 1998) has an article by
Richard Frey of Advanced Power Technologies on building a Push-Pull class C
amplifier for 81.4 MHz, that supplies up to 600 watts at 50% duty factor
(not specified how long the On-periods are), using inexpensive PLASTIC
packaged APT MosFets. Efficiency driven in class C is nearly 78% for the
top end. And the gain is a respectable 12 dB. While it is not a linear
amplifier, this beast is compact, simple, and could provide some
interesting power on 6 meters, one might surmise. The drain voltage is 120
Volts DC. How about a transformerless rig -- YIKES!
