Istok, distributed by Svetlana here in the states, has a 200 and 600 watt
magnetron to generate RF at 915 MHz, +/- 5. Not like traditional S band
magnetrons used in home microwave ovens, these parts have a 7/16 mm DIN
output connector on the tube. Makes circuiting about as easy as unpacking
it, applying cooling, magnetic field, and HV. While magnetrons are not
known for generating coherent RF with low sideband noise, these 'might' be
injection locked to a source, to make high power on this band very simple.
Not sure if anyone has done this. I have tried it at 30 KW once, using a
VSWR of a particular phase to 'clean up' the spectrum. Solid state at this
level is still costly. These tubes are 70% efficient, and use about 3 KV at
<250 mA. The filament power is around 40 watts. Both tubes will push in
frequency as the anode current and power output increase. They are
specified to handle 3:1 VSWR. The 200 Watt tube has a built in cooling fan
on the electromagnet, and the magnetic field can be tuned to adjust the
output power smoothly.
