I still maintain that it is not needed in a properly designed amplifier.
Rich told me that it would be impossible to operate my 4-1000A at 6 KV
without nichrome. Well, I don't have any nichrome in it and I don't even
have a suppressor resistor due to what I think is an ingenious design. I've
operated it HARD for over a year now with nary a problem.
Your friend's homebrew amp could have been suffering from a LOT of problems
due to poor design, long lead lenghts, etc. Nichrome can certainly hide
those as the losses do indeed tend to decrease gain. But the nichrome also
decreases your usable gain as well. It can make a bad amp work, but it is
not needed.
Again: In a properly designed amplifier nichrome is NOT needed.
I don't want to start the debate again and this is the LAST post I am going
to make on this at this time. I don't care what Rich or anyone else says in
reply to this. You all know my feelings, you know my history, my amp is
open to full view on my web page, and you can search the archives for other
posts I've done on this.
