I am referring to damage to the amp caused by lightning inducing an electro
magnetic pulse (EMP) into the antenna/power or control leads. The solid state
amp is likely to be less robust in this respect than the tube amp. The military
have designed for this problem in terms of the electro-magnetic pulse resulting
from an exo-atmospheric nuclear explosion: that pulse is similar to that from
lightning, but not identical. Whether or not it is a problem is another matter.
I would expect there to be more experience of this on solid state HF amps in the
USA, where the lightning and thunderstorms can be awesome in comparison with
western Europe. I know they say things are bigger and better in Texas, but
that's one thing they can definitely keep!
