that explains it I was loading the amp correctly at a lower drive level =
so as not exceed the limits=20
the higher drive exceeded the limits and tripped the breaker protecting =
the amp and tubes as it should
running the amp I had no problems because I didn't exceed the limits
it seems all is well=20

DX is!

thanks to all for all the help

what i am trying to say i cannot load the amp with 100 watts drive =
with out exceeding the 800 ma plate current not grid (grid is ok)=20
i dont think it should reach that that is why i suspect a bad tube

Forget the 100 watts drive...what you are looking at when tuning up
is grid current (230 ma max) and plate current (800 ma max)
Do not advance the drive from the exciter so as to exceed either one
of these limits. Tune and load for maximum power output from the amp
then check the grid and plate current. If either one is above the =
limit,
back off on the drive from the exciter. On SSB the meters should =
peak
to no more than 400 ma plate current, and 115 ma grid current when =
you
speak into the mike. If they do,back off on the mike gain until they =
don't.
    Have fun!
    Phil, K5PC
