Hi Alex,
One adds 3rd harmonic traps in the Plate (and perhaps also the
cathode) circuit of the amp. This "squares" up the plate waveform (and
the grid waveform by means of the cathode trap) by removing the 3rd
harmonic thus lowering plate dissipation.
A RCA 5KW (plate modulated) AM transmitter in the '60's -- the BTA-5T,
claimed 90% plate efficiency in Class "C" using this technique while
using one tube, instead of two for the same power level, saving 15000 kwh
in a year's (24hr) operation.
There is an article in "Broadcast News", March 1960, pp 8-13 that
gives the complete details.
