I think that depending on how many resistors (value and wattage for each?) you employ, you'll have a somewhat high stray inductance/capacitance, and this will degrade load performance.

Hello all,

I am in the need of a 1Kw, or a little higher , dummy load.
From my own early business I have still a few boxes ( 2000 each ) of metalfilm resistors on the shelf.
Thought it might be possible to use them in serial /parallel combination to set up a 1 Kw 50 Ohm dummyload. Since those resistors where delivered on rails of 2000, guess it would not be that difficult to replace the tape by a heavy wire or copperstrips. Knowing that Zt = R + jX and we only need R, jX need to have a value very near to zero. ( not frequecy dependent My question, since I dont dispose of the needed measuring instruments , is there some one out there who had this nasty idee before. What about the jX value of a metalfilm L and C. Did someone messured these values in a real application. I should want to know before going any further, if someone realised this approach, and what are the results?

Thanks for a shout.
