Were you overdriving the amp? You can use the amp without the alc hooked up,
but you do have to watch the power input level.
My suggestion is to tune with a low input power level then raise the drive
until no more increase in power is seen.
How is the vswr? 1.5:1 or better?
Just a couple of ideas.
Take time to note in the manual under tuning, you should peak the load control
for max power then increase the loading (clockwise) until the power drops off
just a tad.
Don't have any ides on the gird protection scheme tho,
Ring up ameritron and the will tell you. I have found them to be very helpful
and informative.

The AL-80B manual and web site discuss an "optional' grid protection board I
believe they call it. I am the new owner of a used AL-80B and would like to
know how I can check if this "optional ' grid protection is in place or not.
As best I can tell this amp was new in 1997.
I have several photos of the inside on my site listed below. If anyone can
spot it or tell me what to look for I would be very appreciative. I got on
this matter after the amp kicked off a couple times on 40M phone. After
several moments it was OK again. I am guessing it was this optional circuit.
