What happens is that the trip switch has both the neutral wire AND the live
one passing through. What keeps it from tripping is the fact that both the
neutral and the live wires current are equal, so that the magnetic fields
created by each one cancel reciprocally. If a fault develops, the currents
become unequal and the net result is the appearance of a magnetic field that
trips the switch. In that case the leakage current has to have a path to
ground in order for the system to operate. This is called differential
operation and is based on the existence of the third wire in a principial
way: it has to exist for the protector to work.
In my home , even though the neutral and ground wires are physically
connected with one another and to the water pipe ground, there are still 3
wires going to each outlet, with only netral and live wires passing through
the protector.
