I forgot to mention one other available possibility.  Digikey and 
other vendors sell pairs of flat ferrite rectangular blocks that are 
intended to be clam shelled around ribbon cable.  If you add a spacer 
to the mating faces, they make nice, compact and mostly self shielding 
inductors.  This works especially well if you wind the wires around a 
pair that have the mating surfaces facing outward, put spacers on all 
4 mating surfaces and sandwich between another pair.  They are made up 
to about 3 inches of length and an inch wide.  The gap spacers provide 
the DC saturation resistance.

stuff good for up to about 10 MHz, high Q coils.
