The 77SX is a ridiculous recommendation for a DXpedition. It is too big and
since the Malta restricts power to 400W, breaking the law might land you in
jail or at the very least, confiscate all your equipment. Also, Acom's and
Alpha 87's are a poor choice because if they go belly up during the
DXpedition they would be difficult to repair. A friend of mine has taken
his Alpha 78 on many DXpeditions and has never had a problem. He has even
checked it through as baggage. The amp is still going strong after over 25
years although the tubes are getting a little tired. He also uses the 78 in
his multi-multi set up in Western NY and it has always performed well.
Since you will be the rare DX, putting the emphasis on antennas is far
smarter than trying to lug a illegal amp all the way to Malta. Why not take
one of the new Yaesu 400W transceivers?
