General comment:

I can only use my large variac if I use a switch-on delay with it. 
Connected directly to the mains 240V supply it would blow a 13A fuse every 
time.  I put a large 1k  resistor in series with the supply to the 
transformer and the relay contacts across it with the coil across the 
transformer.
