Jeff,
I've owned an L4B in the recent past and it is/was an fb amplifier.
I'd try using it stock before any mods are considered. The cost to mod
versus the amount of change in your contact's S-meter would be worth
considering.
Enjoy the amp.

Subject: [Amps] Drake L-4 PS Transformer Rating
I may be getting a L-4B and have already started thinking about how to
get more power out of it. I operate only CW which is a lower duty cycle
than RTTY and higher than SSB. Before I do any further day dreaming
about modifications the the L-4 PS supply, I need to know the the KVA
rating for it's power transformer? There is no point in bumping up the
plate voltage if the transformer is going to sag and overheat under the
increased load.
